A yellow raspberry? Yes, absolutely – and that is usually the first question we get when someone sees Varnes for the first time.

Varnes is a Norwegian-bred yellow raspberry with an exceptionally sweet flavour. In our opinion, it has to be a serious contender for the title of the world's sweetest raspberry. The flavour is intense yet mild, without much of the sharp acidity often associated with red raspberries.

Its appearance certainly doesn't make it any less interesting. The pale golden-yellow berries stand out immediately and almost always attract attention from people who have never seen a yellow raspberry before. Once they taste one, they rarely need much convincing.

Varnes can produce enormous yields, but this variety has one very clear message for the grower: Pay attention!

Once the berries decide to ripen, things happen quickly. They can seemingly go from unripe to ripe overnight, and during peak production they need to be picked almost every day. Leave them too long – particularly in wet weather – and they can go from perfect to overripe remarkably fast.

Rain is definitely not Varnes' best friend.

But picked at exactly the right moment, the combination of that unusual golden colour and extraordinary sweetness is very difficult to beat.
