Sweetheart

Sweetheart has been regarded as a genuinely late sweet cherry variety for many decades.

And yes – it is late.

But if we are going to wait that long for a cherry, it might as well be a seriously good one. Sweetheart produces heart-shaped, wonderfully crisp fruit with an intense, sweet cherry flavour that earns it the title of queen of our late-season varieties.

It deserves it.

Sweetheart also plays an important role in our cherry season. As Lapins begins to finish, we need a bridge towards the very latest varieties. Sweetheart fills that gap beautifully, while providing fairly convincing evidence to our customers that top-quality Norwegian sweet cherries are certainly not limited to the middle of summer.

Cherry season isn't over yet.

The fruit is medium-sized, highly attractive and has exactly the combination of sweetness and crisp texture we are looking for. The only thing we might ask for is a few more of them. Yields tend to be moderate, and in some years the trees can be a little more reluctant to produce than we would like.

Sweetheart is an English-bred variety, a cross between Van and Newstar dating from the mid-1970s. With Van in the family tree, perhaps it isn't entirely surprising that flavour and quality ended up on the right side of the scale.
