Reeves

If you had to choose the main plum of Hardanger, it would be difficult to look beyond Reeves.

We estimate that around half of the plums grown in our area are Reeves – and that is no coincidence. This variety combines heavy yields, large fruit and excellent quality in a way that has made it a true workhorse of modern plum production.

Reeves is a Canadian variety dating from around 1940, and the fruit is easy to recognise. It is large and almost perfectly round, with beautiful orange-pink skin that really stands out.

But Reeves offers far more than good looks.

The flesh is exceptionally juicy, slightly crisp and has a distinctive, very pleasant flavour. The stone also separates remarkably easily from the flesh. Cut a ripe Reeves in half and the stone practically falls out by itself.

What remains are two substantial halves – almost a small meal in their own right.

The trees are generally productive and deliver good crops, although some years can be surprisingly lighter. When Reeves does produce heavily, however, the kilos accumulate very quickly.

And the people doing the picking certainly notice.

Large plums, plenty of weight in every handful and boxes that fill remarkably fast make Reeves a definite favourite among our harvest crew.

Good for the customer. Good for the grower. And definitely good for anyone being paid by the hour to fill boxes. :D
