Prim 3.1

This may be one of the saddest names ever given to a sweet cherry. It sounds less like a fruit variety and more like something that never quite made it out of the experimental stage in a laboratory – until someone suddenly released it to growers and realised they had forgotten to give it a proper name.

“Oh well. Let's call it Prim 3.1.”

But forget the name for a moment, because this is actually a very good cherry.

There are varieties that ripen earlier, but Prim 3.1 is the earliest of our genuinely firm-fleshed sweet cherries. This is where we finally begin to get the combination we have been waiting for all spring: large, beautiful fruit, a properly crisp bite and a flavour that tells us we have reached the part of the season where sweet cherries are getting serious.

The cherries are large, highly attractive and very good to eat, while the trees can produce substantial yields. And because Prim 3.1 arrives so early, it quickly becomes a customer favourite. The very earliest cherries may already have given us our first taste of the season – but this is often the first variety where you can pick up a large, firm, crisp cherry and think:

There we go. Now we're talking.

In many ways, Prim 3.1 is the first complete sweet cherry we harvest during the season.

So there is absolutely nothing wrong with the variety itself.
