Green or red?

There is a small but surprisingly serious debate among pear enthusiasts about which of the compact pears really is the best: the green Clara Frijs – or the red-blushed Celina.

We'll try to remain reasonably neutral here. Reasonably.

Clara Frijs is a compact pear that has earned a very loyal following, and it isn't difficult to understand why. The fruit is small to medium-sized – just about perfect when you need a quick pear fix without committing yourself to an entire meal.

The flavour is classic pear at its best: sweet, juicy and genuinely delicious. This is a variety that doesn't need to reinvent the pear – it simply delivers exactly what many people believe a really good pear should taste like.

Clara Frijs ripens at roughly the same time as Celina, usually a few days earlier, placing it among our mid-early varieties.

Its storage qualities cannot quite compete with the very best long-keeping pears, but they are good enough for the fruit to be handled, packed and distributed commercially. And considering the loyal following Clara Frijs has among Norwegian pear lovers, it is hardly surprising that it remains one of the major varieties grown in Norway.

So which is better – green or red?

We grow both.
