Black currant

Black currant

Season / ripening: July and August

Blackcurrants may not be the berries you eat by the handful straight from the bush, but they can be transformed into something rather spectacular.

Their powerful, fresh and distinctive flavour makes them fantastic for juice, cordial, jam and concentrates. It only takes a few berries to make their presence very clearly known.

The variety we grow is Hedda, a Nordic variety that is exceptionally productive on our farm. The bushes produce large, attractive berries on medium-length strings, and once they get going, there is plenty to harvest.

Blackcurrants are also an important ingredient in our increasingly well-known mixed fruit cups. Among sweet strawberries, raspberries and sweet cherries, they add both a deep colour and a wonderfully fresh kick.

And those little black berries are nutritional powerhouses too.

Blackcurrants are exceptionally rich in vitamin C – around 50 grams can provide an adult's entire daily requirement – and they are also rich in antioxidants.

Great flavour, beautiful berries and packed with goodness.
