Kordia

Kordia is one of the true heavyweights of European sweet cherry production and an important variety in several other parts of the world as well. It isn't particularly difficult to understand why.

This is quite simply a locomotive of a cherry.

The trees are exceptionally productive and can deliver enormous quantities of fruit year after year. In fact, our experience is that Kordia benefits from thinning to keep the crop load at a level where the cherries can develop the size and quality they are capable of.

And there is certainly no shortage of potential.

The cherries are large, beautiful and characteristically heart-shaped. So perfectly heart-shaped, in fact, that you could almost believe that was where the name came from – although unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be quite that simple. :D

The flavour is excellent, with lovely sweetness and a rich, classic sweet cherry character. The texture is firmly towards the crisp end of the scale, although it doesn't quite have the extraordinary crunch of varieties such as Van and Tamara.

But Kordia doesn't really need to win every competition.

When a variety combines excellent flavour, beautiful heart-shaped fruit and yields substantial enough to make the branches wonder what they did wrong, the complete package becomes rather impressive.

Kordia is of Czech origin and dates back to the 1960s, before later becoming established in commercial production. Since then, it has grown into one of the major international sweet cherry varieties and has also been used as a parent in the development of newer cultivars.

So Kordia isn't merely an important cherry in its own right.

It has also helped shape some of the cherries that followed.
