Herrepære

Herrepære is a true old-timer in the world of pears, with roots stretching all the way back to Belgium in the mid-1800s. And whoever developed this variety must have been particularly fond of sweet pears – because they certainly didn't hold back on the sweetness.

The fruit varies somewhat in size, from small to medium, but it is when you take the first bite that Herrepære really shows why it still deserves a place in the orchard.

The flesh is fresh and juicy, with plenty of sweetness and a distinctive pear flavour that sets it apart from many modern varieties. This is a traditional pear from a time when flavour perhaps mattered a little more than how many weeks the fruit could survive in storage.

Because long-term storage is certainly not Herrepære's greatest talent.

But then again, if you are a proper pear enthusiast, pears are meant to be eaten – not stored.

Yields are respectable rather than spectacular, and in a world where new varieties constantly appear, Herrepære is one of those old treasures that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
