Glen Ample

Almost fifty years after Glen Ample was developed in Scotland, it remains the variety against which all the others are measured.

In many ways, Glen Ample is the benchmark of the raspberry world. When new varieties are developed, the question is often whether they can offer higher yields, a longer season or improved characteristics – without sacrificing the qualities that have made this classic so popular.

And above all, it comes down to flavour.

Glen Ample produces large, beautiful and exceptionally good raspberries, with the juicy, distinctive flavour that many people simply believe a raspberry is supposed to have. Yields are good and concentrated around the height of summer, with roughly one month of total production. It may not have the longest season in the world, but what Glen Ample does, it does extremely well.

The berries are just as good eaten fresh from the plant as they are for jam and other processing. And among serious raspberry enthusiasts, Glen Ample has achieved the kind of status that can lead to some fairly passionate discussions if you dare leave it out of the selection.
