Pears
Broket Juli
If you are hungry for pears and impatiently waiting for the season to begin, you may already be familiar with Broket Juli.
This is the earliest pear variety we grow, ripening well before the rest of the orchard has even started thinking seriously about harvest.
The name does make a slightly ambitious promise. Despite Juli literally meaning “July pear”, we don't normally harvest it in July. In some years, however, we have picked the first fruit right at the beginning of August – and after waiting since the previous year for fresh pears, that still feels remarkably early.
And the flavour doesn't disappoint. These small to medium-sized fruits have a genuinely good, classic pear flavour.
Broket Juli is in a hurry after harvest too.
This is a very soft and delicate pear that tolerates neither much transport nor storage. Once properly ripe, the journey from tree to stomach needs to be a short one – preferably no more than a day or two. This is definitely not the pear to put aside with plans to eat it sometime next week.
But that doesn't really matter.
Because every year brings the same little moment: the first Broket Juli is ripe, the first pear is picked – and pear season has officially begun again.
Besides being first out of the starting blocks, the variety is also an important pollinator for several of our other pear varieties.
